seminar: Grafting and Poisson structure in (2+1)-gravity with vanishing cosmological constant

speaker: Catherine Meusburger (Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics)

abstract: The subject of the talk is the relation between the geometrical construction of (2+1)-spacetimes via grafting and phase space and Poisson structure in the Chern-Simons formulation of (2+1)-dimensional gravity for the case of vanishing cosmological constant. It explains how grafting along simple, closed geodesics is implemented in the Chern-Simons formalism and how it gives rise to a transformation on the phase space. This transformation is infinitesimally generated via the Poisson bracket by one of the two basic gauge invariant observables associated to the geodesic. Furthermore, it turns out that it is closely related to the action of Dehn twists, which are infinitesimally generated by the other gauge invariant observable. It is discussed how this provides an interpretation of the gauge invariant observables arising in the Chern-Simons formulation of (2+1)-dimensional gravity in terms of spacetime geometry.
