Modelling and analysis of phase transitions

19 January 2006 - 21 January 2006

Aims

A simplified model of phase transitions accounting for diffusion of latent heat was already proposed in 1889 by the physicist Josef Stefan, and since then has been named after him. This is an example of free boundary problem, and as such has been the object of intense research in analysis in the last decades. Phase transitions are also of special interest for research in physics, engineering, materials science and other disciplines. Collaboration with applied researcher has brought new blood to these mathematical studies, that nowadays are characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. Accordingly, modelling and analytical issues will be the focus of this workshop.
