Lagrange two hundred years later (Aula Dini, Palazzo Castelletto)

On Lagrange's contributions to the theory of numbers

speaker: Carlo Viola (Dipartimento di Matematica "L.Tonelli", Università di Pisa)

abstract: Besides some isolated results, Lagrange's contributions to number theory fall into two main groups: the first on the foundations of the arithmetic theory of continued fractions and of Diophantine approximation, and the second on the foundations of the arithmetic theory of binary quadratic forms. Lagrange's results in both these fields had strong impact on subsequent research, from Legendre and Gauss through the whole twentieth century.
