The development of mathematics in Greece and the Risorgimento

speaker: Christine Phili (Scuola Politechnica di Atene)

abstract: From 1815 during the Congress of Vienna Lord Guilford expressed his desire to count Giovanni Capo d' Istria , the Russian Minister of Forein Affairs, to revive the Platonic Academy whose function had been suppressed by the decree of the emperor Justinian in 529.
Thus in 1824 Lord Guilford's program was realised through the foundation of the Ionian Academy in Corfu. This institution was established before the creation of the Greek state (1827) and although the Ionian Islands were under British rule, the Ionian Academy adopted Greek as its official language. Moreover Ioannis Carandinos (1784-1835) Rector of the Ioanian Academy(1824-1832) and professor of mathematics initiated his students to modern French mathematics by his lectures and his translations.
Besides the geographical proximity as well as the same political destiny provoked a certain osmosis between Italy and the Ionian Islands known as the Stati Uniti delle Isole Jonie. Moreover the secret societies such as the carboneria as well as the Masnory and the political mouvements, as for example this of Mazzini, the competion concerning the control of this mediterrenean region between France and Great Britain contributed to the social approach of the Italian and the Greek peoples.
After the Austrian supression of the Italian revolt many Italians took refuge in the Ionian Islands as for example G. Orioli (1785-1856) professor of physics , Paolo Costa (1771-1836) professor of litterature and poet , Ottaviano Mossotti (1791-1863) professor of mathematics ,who invited to teach in Italian at the Ionian Academy of Corfu.
