Weakly regular Einstein spacetimes with Gowdy symmetry

abstract: I will discuss the construction of Lorentzian manifolds satisfying Einstein's field equations of general relativity under the assumption of Gowdy symmetry, that is, under the existence of two spacelike, commuting, orthogonally transitive Killing fields. The spacetimes under consideration have weak regularity, only, and may contain impulsive gravitational waves (e.g. Dirac masses in the curvature) propagating at the speed of light. In this setting, challenging questions on the global causal structure of these spacetimes can be addressed. This lecture is based on joint papers with A.R. Rendall (Albert Einstein Institute, Potsdam) and with J. M. Stewart (DAMPT, Cambridge).
