abstract: Enrico Betti gave fundamental contributions to potential theory which are contained in a series of papers published in Nuovo Cimento in 1863-1864 and in a volume appeared in 1879 (Pisa, Nistri). Betti applied his methods results of potential theory – such as Dirichlet principle and Green’s functions – to other research fields of mathematical physics (especially to theory of elasticity, but also to heat theory, electricity, magnetism and electrodynamics). I shall discuss these (analytical) methods, compare them to some contemporary contributions and point out his influence in Italy and abroad.
